Before the introduction of the Premier League in 1992, the four in the final table ranked highest placed in the Third Division. The bottom of the table had to descend depending on the economic situation of future teams in the Football Conference and thus lose its official status as a professional team. An automatic descent into the Football Conference did not exist until 1987. The Fourth Division was founded in 1958, when the twelve best teams of the Third Division South and Third Division North united to the Third Division and the remaining clubs created the Fourth Division.
